Veliko Tarnovo Bulgaria

Veliko Tarnovo is one of Bulgaria’s most prosperous tourist towns, thanks to its fortress and medieval buildings. It became the country’s capital during the Second Bulgarian Empire under the Czars. This Bulgarian town lies about 250 km from Sofia and is nestled between three hills: Tzarevetz, Trapezitza and Momina Krepost. The most culturally important is Tzarevetz, where the King’s Palace and the Patriarch’s Palace were built, protected by the medieval fortress. The medieval capital of Bulgaria enjoyed a reputation as a holy city and a centre of Christianity. For this reason, Veliko Tarnovo has many Romanesque churches, such as the Church of Saint Demetrius.
